Event Details

Robert Fieseler, a local author and activist, will discuss “Thomas Paine and the Value of Dissent,” at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 16, at the Wagner Library, 6646 Riverside Drive, Metairie This event is free of charge and open to the public. It occurs as part of the regularly scheduled meeting of the New Orleans Secular Humanist Association.

Paine's Common Sense was published in Jan 1776 and is the precursor to Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. Fieseler says he like to talk about the wider lens of Thomas Paine and the concept e of what it means to be a "dissenter" against tyranny within the framework of American patriotism.

In the talk, Fieseler says he'll include “some examples of queer history and memory work as acts of resistance/protest, but I'm also thinking of some Civil Rights movement examples to demonstrate lineage with Paine across time.”
