Cyril Lagvanec, PhD, the curator of the American-Italian Research Library located on the second floor of the East Bank Regional Library, will give a lecture on the Greek War for Independence, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and open to the public. Registration is not required.

The Greek War of Independence pitted Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire. It occurred from 1821 to 1829. In 1826, the Greeks were assisted by the British Empire, Kingdom of France, and the Russian Empire. The Ottomans were aided by their vassals, especially the Eyalet of Egypt.

All Greek territory except the Ionian Islands, the Mani Peninsula, and the mountainous regions in Epirus, had been under Ottoman rule since the 15th century.

The war led to the formation of modern Greece, which would be expended to its modern size in later years. Greek Independence Day is celebrated on March 25.
